The Big Move

The Big Move

Moving can be stressful and hectic for the entire family. However this can be avoided if you plan ahead. The further you plan ahead, the better. If possible, we suggest that you start to plan your moving day at least six (6) weeks prior to the event. This may sound like a long time, but it is worth it.

The following checklist provides a step-by-step guide to your moving day.

Six weeks before

  • Call a number of removalists and arrange for quotations.
  • Arrange insurance with your move- you just never know.
  • Decide whether you want to pack yourself or have it done by the moving Company’s experienced personnel. They can do as much or as little as you want, from lugging just the heavy furniture like the washing machine and fridge, to managing the whole move which means unpacking all your bits and pieces at the other end.

Four to six weeks before

  • Put together a list of organizations and people you need to notify of your change of address. This should include:
    • Family and friends
    • Financial Institutions
    • Telephone Company
    • Accountant
    • Solicitor
    • Gas
    • Electricity
    • Water Company
    • Newspapers
    • School & Universities
    • Insurance
    • Motor Registry
    • Publications
    • Subscriptions
    • Clubs
    • Professional Services
    • Post Office – mail redirection
  • Do a big clean and discard items you do not wish to take with you. It may be a good idea to hold a garage sale to get rid of unwanted items.
  • Begin packing items that you will not need to use prior to the move. It is important to label all boxes clearly. This makes for easier unpacking at the other end.
  • Create a packing inventory. Keep a record of the total number of boxed you have to move and the contents for each box. If something goes missing you will not exactly how many boxes and the items in those boxes. To do this you need items such as:
    • Labels, stickers or a marker pen
    • Notebook
    • White paper or newspaper for packing
    • Tape
    • Scissors
    • Sharp Knife

One week prior

  • Ensure you have notified gas, telephone, electricity and water companies.
  • Confirm with your removalist their arrival time.
  • Arrange a pre-settlement inspection with your agent.
  • Arrange for utilities to be connected to your new home.
  • Pack a box for your instant needs on arrival. This box should be packed last and unloaded first. We recommend it contain:
    • Cleaning products, rubber gloves, sponges and paper towel
    • Wet ones
    • Garbage bags
    • Tools
    • Toilet paper
    • Plastic cups, plates and cutlery
    • Kettle
    • Snacks, breakfast cereal, sandwich spreads, bottled water
    • Tea, coffee, long life milk
    • Pet food
    • Soap & Hand lotion
    • Toiletries
    • Light bulbs
    • Torch
    • Toys, games and books to entertain the children.

Moving Day

  • Keep valuables with you.
  • Know where you house keys are – you still have to lock up!
  • Make arrangements for the keys once you have moved out.
  • Take a last look around all the rooms before the removalist leave. Check that nothing has been left behind and no damage has occurred to the property as you move out.
  • Turn off the water, gas and electricity. Lock the windows and doors.
  • Ensure you have notified gas, telephone, and electricity and water companies.
  • Be on hand at your new home to ensure arrival of goods.
  • Note any damages that may have occurred during the move on the inventory list.
